For almost four years, the Tiny House Warriors have been working to stop the TMX pipeline from encroaching on their territory, and as of Tuesday, the Secwe̓pemc land defenders have a human rights award to go along with their efforts.

The world's oceans suck up a huge chunk of human-caused emissions, but their role in mitigation strategies and targets is largely absent from critical negotiations underway at the UN climate conference in Glasgow, Canadian scientist Anya Waite says.

A massive carbon sink, the oceans are doing much of the “heavy lifting,” sopping up as much as 40 per cent of our fossil fuel emissions over the past 200 years, said Waite, CEO of the Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia.

Rev. David Haslam, a well-known British human rights and tax justice firebrand, has this little joke he tells. “I am really worried about the souls of the wealthy.”

“If we are going to save their souls, we’re going to have to take some money off them.”

The link below is to the text of a letter from City of Burnaby Lawyer Greg McDade to the Canadian Energy Regulator (CER) objecting to the regulator's decision to grant Trans Mountain permission, going far beyond what Trans Mountain even requested, to destroy any trees in Burnaby for whatever reasons for the indeterminate future. Can you say "captured regulator?"

At Cop26 the wealthy countries cast themselves as saviours, yet their efforts are hopelessly inadequate and will prolong the injustice

The story of the past 500 years can be crudely summarised as follows. A handful of European nations, which had mastered both the art of violence and advanced seafaring technology, used these faculties to invade other territories and seize their land, labour and resources.

Beyond the ‘blah blah blah’ of climate summits lies the real solution our leaders refuse to acknowledge. First of two parts.

Since 1995 there have been 25 global conferences on climate change. At every one our so-called political leaders have kicked the can down the road and sung from a bright green hymnbook.

Greta Thunberg has disparaged the refrain as nothing more than “blah, blah, blah.”

She is right of course. Blah, blah blah has kept emissions rising, along with energy spending and its twin sibling unbridled economic growth.

Globe and hand image - A society that consumes less energy and stuff could rehumanize society and heal the biosphere.

We’d contract energy use by half. Shrinking consumption is the solution we can actually live with. Second of two.
